Soviet Union Soviet-Afghanistan War Propaganda Collection
Soviet Union Soviet-Afghanistan War Propaganda Collection: Soviet ground forces, under the command of Marshal Sergey Sokolov, entered Afghanistan from the north on 27 December 1979.
The first phase of the war began with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and first battles with various opposition groups. Soviet troops entered Afghanistan along two ground routes and one air corridor, quickly taking control of the major urban centers, military bases and strategic installations.
The promotion of Mikhail Gorbachev to General Secretary in 1985 and his ‘new thinking’ on foreign and domestic policy was likely an important factor in the Soviets’ decision to withdraw. (Wikipedia)
